Cardboard Boxes
To Do: Flatten the box to save space.
Where To Recycle: Your kerbside recycling bin (most UK councils accept this).
Tip: Remove any tape, stickers, or labels if possible.
Paper Inserts & Tissue Paper
What To Do: Fold or crumple up and place in recycling.
Where To Recycle: Paper recycling at home or local recycling centre.
Avoid: Glitter, foil, or plastic-coated paper, those go in general waste.
Padded Envelopes (Paper + Bubble Wrap)
Mixed Materials like these are tricky.
What To Do: Tear open and separate the bubble wrap from the paper outer.
- Paper - Recycle
- Bubble Wrap - See Below
Bubble Wrap & Air Pillows
Recyclable? Yes, but NOT in your regular bin.
What To Do: Collect and take to your local supermarket soft plastic recycling point (e.g., Tesco, Co-op, Sainsbury’s).
Tip: Pop the bubbles to save space.
Plastic Mailer Bags
Type: LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene), look for recycling code #4.
Where To Recycle: Same as bubble wrap, use a soft plastic drop-off point.
Note: Make sure they’re clean and dry.
Packing Peanuts
Type: Cornstarch (compostable) or Polystyrene (not recyclable).
How To Tell: Put one under water, if it dissolves, it’s compostable.
- Compostable: bin or garden compost.
- Polystyrene: reuse or check with local household waste recycling centre.
Compostable Mailers
What To Do: Check for “compostable” certification (e.g., EN 13432).
If home compostable: pop it in your compost bin.
If industrial compost only: check local council guidelines.
Stickers & Labels
Unfortunately, most are not recyclable unless they are paper-based with no coating.
What To Do: Peel off and dispose of in general waste.
