Phoenix Fitness:

How did you start off your fitness journey?

Emily:

I have ridden horses all my life (showjumping) but when I gave up my own horses to focus on a career in racehorse breeding I needed something for ME after work.

Phoenix Fitness:

At what stage in your life where you encouraged to get into fitness?

Emily:

I was 21 when I first properly joined a gym. I was a fairly sporty kid, played county netball, was naturally strong and competed in shot put at national level. I was never proud of my body image at school, tall and broad compared to my girl friends. I saw my strength as something ugly. If I could go back now I would tell myself to get training and get stronger.

Phoenix Fitness:

Did you invest in fitness equipment?

Emily:

At first I had my gym membership and the workouts I did at home were usually bodyweight workouts by Joe Wicks. My first purchase was probably my Phoenix Fitness gym mat. Now I have a bunch of resistance bands, mini bands, slam ball and boxing gloves. Boxing is the best fun.

Have you ever tried working out at home and how did this work out for you?

Emily:

Working out at home is really hard! It’s hard because you have no one there but yourself to motivate you. You also generally have limited equipment to work with and have to get creative. I recently did a 4 week series of home HIIT workouts live on Facebook. I asked anyone who followed along to send me a sweaty selfie on completion of their workout and we had a good little support community going. My mum joined in the workouts at home and having her and our little group made it whole lot more fun and gave us so much accountability and motivation. I am hoping to do this again in the new year, potentially with some prizes.

Phoenix Fitness:

Did you consider a personal trainer or workout plan?

Emily:

I got a free PT session with my monthly membership and thank god I did as if it wasn’t for Kate I don’t think I would have ever had the courage to step foot in the weight section. After one session with her I signed up for extra and she helped me conquer all of my gym fears, taught me good form for lifting and gave me so many workout ideas. I found all of the trainers super helpful and I did lots of the classes which helped me get to know people

Phoenix Fitness:

Did you create clear and trackable goals?

Emily:

At the start I didn’t and for that reason I was never consistent with my training. I still had the mentality that exercise was the punishment I deserved for eating chocolate or ice cream. I realise now that good nutrition doesn’t mean you have to give up your favourite things.

I wish I had started my training to get strong and used all of my “newbie gains” (the first 2-6months of lifting when the stimulus on the nervous system is such that gains in muscle strength and size are made more quickly) to full effect instead of just wanting to “get skinny”. It took me a long time to realise the importance of goal setting and planning and certainly nutrition. I now plan with a long term goal in mind broken up into sub goals which I know if I achieve on a weekly or monthly basis will get me to my end goal.

Phoenix Fitness:

Was Transformation ever tracked during your fitness journey, if so why do you think this is important?

Emily:

I personally tracked my fat loss during my transformation which I think is the most accurate way to asses your cut. After becoming addicted to weighing and starving myself before I see no benefit in measuring “my gravitational pull to the earth” if I was on the moon I wouldn’t weigh a thing. Like I said beginners especially can build muscle whilst losing fat and feel deflated if they don’t see the scale coming down.

Phoenix Fitness:

Did you ever leave focus to your fitness journey, if so what motivated you to get back on track?

Emily:

I did lose focus many times, but enjoying the process was the main thing that kept me going. Enjoying each workout, learning something new, being around people I admired and setting clear goals.

Phoenix Fitness:

Which exercises do you find work best for you to achieve your overall goals?

Emily:

Deadlifts!! Number 1 favourite exercise. I remember learning to do these for the first time and pulling 90kg, I felt so strong hehe! They are absolutely great to work your hamstrings, glutes, quads, erector spinea and traps. Strengthening my glutes has had such a massive impact on my posture and improved my lower back pain.

Phoenix Fitness:

Are you happy with that you have achieved or are you wanting to do better? if so what are your next goals?

Emily:

I think it is very hard to be completely happy with your own body, we are always finding new floors or trying to work towards a new goal telling ourselves we will be happy when we get there. I think aesthetically I am happy with my body although I would love a six pack, it is a healthy one. I want to focus on measurable goals like increasing my deadlift strength or being able to do a plyo push up. I enjoy my training and my goal is to keep enjoying it.

Phoenix Fitness:

Do you have any top tips to give to beginners who are starting off their fitness journey based on your experience?

Emily:

My top tip would be to seek advice from professionals for good form technique and workout ideas and give yourself the best start. Never be afraid of asking someone if you could share equipment or spot you in the gym. I have been lucky and made some great friends in the gym, I am sure you will too.

I am currently travelling through Bolivia with my boyfriend so there is also a lot of hiking and travelling pictures.
