Shelley's dose of motivation

DAY 14

"DON'T WISH FOR THE BODY YOU WANT, WORK FOR IT!"

Check out @thewandering_avocado fitness journey!

Phoenix Fitness:

Overall as an individual do you consider yourself to be motivated when carrying out a task?

Shelley:

Yes, I have always been really personally motivated in both my job and fitness I do feel however this is because I love what I do. Specifically in fitness, it’s about finding what you enjoy because when it’s fun it doesn’t feel like a task or chore, fitness is about finding a lifestyle that works for you, it shouldn’t be a quick fix to lose weight or punish yourself for the food/drink you have consumed.

Phoenix Fitness:

What do you require from yourself when working out?

Shelley:

I personally think half the battle is showing up. If you are doing a group workout usually banging tunes and the energy from the other people is enough to get me going, I have always played team sports growing up so feel I work better with others and feeding off their energy.

If I am doing a solo workout I need to have focus and a plan. If I don’t, I tend to doing a little of everything and not feel like I have got my full potential out of the workout. I will try to plan my weights/ hiit session usually looking on Instagram for inspiration.

Phoenix Fitness:

what’s it worth to you to achieve a healthier, fitter, happier life?

Shelley:

Having a healthy lifestyle is really important to me. I have had a struggling relationship with food in the past where I have tried quick fixes, the fad diets but none of them work. They leave you feeling demotivated and I personally think long term they are not sustainable. Allowing myself to let a healthy lifestyle become part of my life, not just a month before a holiday or event has really helped with my relationship with food and fitness. I used to punish myself for missing a class or workout, often going aimlessly to the gym when my muscles were so sore and I should have been resting. Now I am confident in the process to know when to listen to my body and also a healthy lifestyle allows for treats which helps to achieve this in the long term.

Phoenix Fitness:

How do you find motivation to exercise on a daily basis?

Shelley:

I just love the feeling when you finish a workout. You are exhausted but your body feels so strong. I love challenging myself and discovering what my body can achieve.

Phoenix Fitness:

Have you ever lost focus from your routine? if so, how did you get back on track?

Have you ever lacked motivation during your fitness journey? if so, how did this effect you?

Shelley:

Yes, I have had fitness lulls before where I have lost all motivation. I always find mixing it up, changing your daily routine with a new exciting class or getting some of your mates together and workout with them. Fitness should be fun, you need to find what works for you, its ok not to want to be pumping weights if that isn’t your thing, fitness comes in all variations and when you learnt to accept that your journey cannot be compared to anyone else’s you begin to enjoy ‘your’ journey.

Phoenix Fitness:

What motivates you push yourself?

Shelley:

The way it makes you feel and seeing how strong the body is and what it can achieve.

Phoenix Fitness:

How do you make up for a missed workout?

Shelley:

If it’s because my body is sore and needs a well-earned rest then some self-love. Go home relax, take a magnesium bath and let my body rest.

If it’s because of work or life getting in the way. Put it behind you, life’s too short to worry about missing a workout – just go Smash the next one.

Phoenix Fitness:

How does missing a workout effect your goals?

Shelley:

It doesn’t – I have learnt to accept that life doesn’t always work out the way you hope, plans change and you shouldn’t beat yourself up if you miss a workout, just smash the next one!

Phoenix Fitness:

Do you have any motivation tips, quotes or stories to give to beginners who are starting off their fitness journey based on your experience?

Shelley:

Don’t compare your step one to someone else’s step ten.

Everyone starts somewhere and every fitness journey is different. I truly believe that everyone can love fitness and getting active, you just have to find what works for you.
